Family and Friend Psycho-Education for OCD
This is a 6-week psycho-educational group tailored for family members and friends of individuals receiving treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Week 1: Understanding OCD
Definition of OCD. Causes, prognosis and treatment options.
Week 2: Accommodation, Impact, and Change
Opportunity for reflection about reviewed psycho-educational resources previously provided; identify and discuss impact on loved one, self and family system and building motivation for change; provide examples of accommodation, review and identify accommodation behaviors.
Week 3: Motivation, anxiety tolerance, and continuation of exploration of accommodation
Review accommodation patterns and discuss progress and concerns; explore past patterns of accommodation (overt and covert) and start to write out an accommodation plan to decrease behaviors to support loved one.
Week 4: Self care, compassion, boundaries and communication
Discuss role of responsibility, guilt, shame and blame in OCD presentation; focus on self care, communication of boundaries, creating social support and developing a system of support as well as identifying your own triggers to accommodation and loved ones OCD behavior.
Week 5: Supporting self and loved one in the long term
Discuss progress and hopes for the future. Provide and review long term support and educational resources.
